Professor at the University of Athens, Georgios Papatheodoridis, Joins the Academy of Europe

The Hellenic Association for the Study of Liver is thrilled to announce that Professor Georgios Papatheodoridis from the University of Athens, a prominent member and former President of the Association, has achieved yet another significant honour: he has been elected as a full member of the Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe).

The Academy of Europe boasts among its ranks some of the most esteemed scientists from across all disciplines, representing a wide range of countries worldwide. It is worth noting that 17 scholars from Greece have been elected as members in the field of Life Sciences over the years, including 10 medical doctors.

Professor Papatheodoridis’s induction ceremony took place on Thursday, October 16, 2025, in Barcelona, Spain, at the 36th Annual Conference of Academia Europaea and 14th Conference of the Young Academy of Europe entitled ‘Building Bridges 2025’.

Georgios Papatheodoridis is a great scientist with a rich and diverse research portfolio in the fields of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and a widespread recognition within the global medical community. This latest accomplishment is no surprise to those familiar with his impactful publications—which have revolutionized the approach to complex diseases, such as chronic hepatitis B—his relentless passion for research, his tireless work ethic, his high moral standards, and the ongoing, meaningful support he provides to young doctors, helping them achieve their goals and become worthy successors of his work.

Heartfelt congratulations to Professor Papatheodoridis, whose continued contributions make the Greek Hepatology community proud. It is a shared belief that even greater recognitions will follow, as he truly deserves them.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
