Host laboratory: The Institute of Movement Sciences (ISM) is a joint multidisciplinary research unit of Aix-Marseille University and CNRS. The laboratory’s research themes focus on the study of the motor skills of living beings from different angles. The research team about Bio-inspired Design team (CBI, French acronym) has as objective to study the principles and strategies derived from biological systems in order to draw inspiration for mechanical design.
A postdoctoral position is available in the ISM laboratory. Funding for this work comes from Dassault Systèmes Foundation.
The aim of this project is the development of a mechanical design approach inspired by the biological process of joint development. This project is about bio-inspiration from the osteogenesis (or endochondral ossification) process. Biological joints are made up a smart combination of soft (hyaline cartilage), spongy (trabecular bone) and hard compact (cortical bone) materials. This tissue differentiation process has been described and reproduced numerically by biologists. The goal is to adapt this natural design principle to a mechanical design methodology for designing mechanical joints. In an iterative way, the methodology should adapt the material properties of a mechanical part by simulating the endochondral ossification. This ossification process is based on the estimated stress field. The methodology will be tested by means of industrial case studies. Experimental tests will be carried out taking advantage of the capabilities of additive manufacture and the mechanical testing hall available at the ISM laboratory. Results must be reported through journal publications.
