‘The signing of the Head of Terms Agreement with the University of Exeter today is a watershed event for the University of Athens and our School of Medicine. By partnering with the University of Exeter, a leading UK Institution, we aim to offer a high-quality Programme with an international focus and perspective. The entire initiative further underscores how the University of Athens continues to invest in knowledge, foster innovation, and create opportunities for students both within and beyond national borders.’

Accordingly, Richard Holland, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the University of Exeter Medical School, said:

This is an important day for both Universities of Exeter and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens as we come together to sign our Head of Terms Agreement to pursue development of our unique joint undergraduate medical degree, with the ambition to open the first joint medical degree in September 2028.

A joint degree that will be designed to have both Hellenic Authority and UK GMC approval will be the first of its kind.

We consider this Head of Terms to be more than simply a connection through Medical Education as it brings our two great Universities closer together with opportunities to work even closer in mutual areas of our research interest and the potential to develop at the areas of educational collaboration.

Finally, I wish to personally thank the Rector and Dean for their wonderful hospitality. The warmth of our welcome and the enthusiasm and commitment of all your staff means that I know this collaboration will be a great success. Thank you!

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
