Professor Elisabeth Crouzet-Pavan was awarded the title of doctor honoris causa of the NKUA’s Department of History and Archaeology

Dr Elisabeth Crouzet-Pavan, Professor at Paris-Sorbonne University (Paris IV), was awarded the title of doctor honoris causa of the NKUA’s Department of History and Archaeology, on Wednesday, 8 November 2023, at 19:00, at the Great Hall of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, addressed the ceremony, and Dr Nikoletta Giantsi-Meletiadi, Professor at the NKUA’s Department of History and Archaeology, presented the work and personality of the honouree. 

In his speech, the Rector of NKUA said, among other things, the following:

It is with great honour and joy, given the stature and significant work of our special guest—and always in keeping with a long-standing tradition of our Institution to celebrate those who have contributed the most to Science—that we confer today a high honour of our University, the title of doctor honoris causa, awarded by the Department of History and Archaeology of the NKUA’s School of Philosophy to Professor Elisabeth Crouzet-Pavan, an all-important historian who has dedicated her life to studying and teaching history.

Throughout her career, Professor Elisabeth Crouzet-Pavan held significant and highly prestigious academic and administrative posts. She has also received numerous honorary titles and awards. In 2002 she won the Guizot Prize of the French Academy in history. She became a Knight of the National Order of Merit in 2004, a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2007, and a doctor honoris causa of Ghent University, Belgium, in 2012. In 2022, she earned the European History Book Prize for her work entitled ‘Venice from the 6th to the 21st century’. She is currently Professor of Medieval History Emeritus at Paris-Sorbonne University.

Shortly after, Professor Katerina Nikolaou, Chair at the NKUA’s Department of History and Archaeology, read the Department’s Resolution, the Award, and the Honorary Diploma. Then, the Dean of the NKUA’s School of Philosophy, Professor Dimitrios Drosos, invested the honouree with the gown of the School.

The ceremony concluded with a speech by the honouree, Professor Elisabeth Crouzet-Pavan, entitled ‘Venise et Byzance: les histoires d’un imaginaire (VΙe-XVe siècle)’ [Venice and Byzantium: Accounts of an Imaginary World (6th-15th centuries)].

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
