Α new book, by NKUA classical archaeology professor Dimitris Plantzos, has been published by Coimbra University Press in Portugal, titled Athens Demapped: Archaeology, Heritage, and Urban Transformation.
The study, written following an invitation from the Portuguese publishing house for its new scholarly series entitled “Humanidades”, explores the interconnection between classical heritage, memory, and modernity in contemporary Athens. The book’s central theme is how archaeology, tourism, and urban planning have shaped the city’s identity, depicting Athens not as a timeless monument of antiquity, but as a contested landscape where past and present collide.

The study is available through the Coimbra University Press website. The Greek translation of the book, by Twenty-First Editions, is expected in 2026.
