CIVIS’s objectives for the next four years are in line with the European Strategy for Universities. The CIVIS alliance joins forces and invests in transnational cooperation to educate a new generation of European citizens on key contemporary challenges. These challenges are reflected in its five interdisciplinary Hubs: (1) Climate, Environment, & Energy; (2) Society, Culture, & Heritage; (3) Health; (4) Cities, Territories & Mobilities; (5) Digital & Technological Transformation. In concert with its academic Hubs, CIVIS.2 will continue to roll out challenge-based education and encourage intersectoral civic engagement. This is to be done in conjuncture with a further strengthening of its inter-university campus, a multiplication of the forms of mobility, and an expansion of its embedded joint educational offer.

Our alliance is also going to proceed to accreditation via existing channels with an eye to having CIVIS’s educational offer certified in a range of forms, from joint European degrees to flexible educational modules embedded in existing programmes. In that context, a legal statute for the alliance and its partner universities would allow them to mutualise their strengths together, make common strategic decisions and act together with a legal personality.

The launch of the CIVIS Digital Campus will enable the integration of all the services and administrative processes that all partner universities provide to their communities. More specifically, the campus will be done in conjunction with the European Student Card Initiative in each partner university to foster positive synergies.

To reach a systemic, structural and sustainable impact, European Universities need adequate funding support and financial stability. In view of the scale of the alliances’ needs and ambition, their financial viability will continue to depend heavily on EU programmes, as well as on national support.

Lastly, environmental sustainability within CIVIS has two facets: encouraging sustainable forms of mobility on the one hand and a green digitalisation agenda on the other. A central component of the CIVIS.2 agenda is to encourage new forms of mobility which are in harmony with the project’s move towards green digitisation. We are expecting important results from the Digital and Technological Transformations Hub. Apart from that Hub, CIVIS has already established the Hub ‘Climate, Environment and Energy’, which has created more than 30 joint courses of all educational levels. In CIVIS phase 2,  the first joint Master Degree will be launched under the auspices of the Hub, which will lay emphasis on green sustainability.
