2nd Open Event for the Academic Community and Civic Stakeholders of the NKUA on the Service-Learning methodology in the framework of the European Research Programme KA2 Erasmus+: Service-Learning: Intersectoral Collaboration Practices for the development of students’ soft skills and socially engaged universities

On Monday 22 April 2024 (16:00-19:30), an Open Event will be held for the academic community (teaching staff and students) and the civic stakeholders of the NKUA entitled: “The Service- Learning methodology in the framework of the European Research Programme KA2 Erasmus+: Service-Learning. Intersectoral Collaboration Practices for the development of students’ soft skills and socially engaged universities” (SL-ICP).

 The event aims to present the Service-Learning methodology through a) a short report on the conclusions of the mapping research related to the implementation of this methodology in five (5) Universities participating in this European project and b) the presentation of five (5) Service-Learning projects that were implemented during the current academic year, in the context of undergraduate and postgraduate courses taught in different Departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

This European project is funded by the Key Action 2 Cooperation Partnership – Higher Education and aims to raise awareness among European universities about Service-Learning (SL), as a pedagogical methodology, and to support all stakeholders (academics, students, and civil society organizations) to create and consolidate systematic partnerships between universities and civil society. This project involves five universities (all members of the CIVIS Alliance, including the NKUA and one Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) which has the coordinating role.

 In the 2nd Open Event, the Service-Learning projects will be presented by students who participated in them (while in the corresponding 1st Open Event, which took place in October 2023, the projects were presented by the teachers who coordinated them). In the framework of the event, a six-member Jury, headed by the Vice-Rector for Academic, International Relations, and Extroversion, will select the two teams that will represent the NKUA at the European Forum of the Research Programme to be held in June in Bucharest.

The event will take place at the Amphitheater “G. Kotzias”, School of Medicine of the University of Athens (Agiou Thoma Square, Goudi). Detailed information on the presentations can be found in the attached programme.

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
