Proceedings of the 2nd Open Event for the Academic Community and Civic Stakeholders of the NKUA on the Service-Learning methodology in the framework of the European Research Programme KA2 Erasmus+: Service-Learning: Intersectoral Collaboration Practices for the development of students’ soft skills and socially engaged universities

The 2nd Open Event for the Academic Community and civic stakeholders of the NKUA, entitled: “The Service-Learning Methodology in the framework of the Erasmus+ European Research Programme KA2: Service-Learning: Intersectoral Cooperation Practices for the development of students’ soft skills and socially engaged universities” (SL-ICP), took place on Monday 22nd April 2024 at the “G. Kotzias” Amphitheatre of the NKUA’s School of Medicine. In this event, the aim was to disseminate important research results on the implementation of Service-Learning methodology at the NKUA and the other four partner universities of this research programme (Sapienza-Rome, Autonomous University of Madrid, Aix-Marseille University, University of Bucharest).

The programme of the event comprised two parts. The first part included a short presentation of the mapping research, co-ordinated and edited by Marlen Mouliou, Assistant Professor of the Department of History and Archaeology (NKUA) and focused on the two volumes that have been published as a result of this research project (in an extended and a short version). The second part of the event comprised the presentation of five (5) Service-Learning projects implemented during the current academic year, in the context of undergraduate and postgraduate courses taught in different Departments of the NKUA. The presentation of the projects was enthusiastically carried out by the students, emphasising the importance of applying the Service-Learning pedagogical methodology in higher education. Following the presentation of the projects, a committee selected  the two (2) teams that would represent the NKUA at the European Forum of this research programme, due to be held in Bucharest between 25 to 28 June 2024.

The selection committee was composed by the following members: Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, International Relations and Extroversion of the NKUA Sophia Papaioannou (Chair of the Committee), Maria Daskolia (Associate Professor of the Department of Educational Studies, School of Philosophy), Evangelos Papoulias (Head of the Department of Museums and Historical Archives of NKUA), Ilias Antoniou (CIVIS Project Manager), Anna Trigatzi (PhD Candidate, Faculty of Educational Studies), Sophia Papadimitriou (Head of Educational RadioTelevision & Digital Media, Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports).

The projects selected are: a) “Improving the Lives of the Elderly II: the Service-Learning Methodology in the Service of the Community”, implemented by Postgraduate students and their professor Ypatia Doussi-Anagnostopoulou (Associate Professor, Department of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences) and b) “Training students of Museum Studies in the conceptual design of exhibitions and the use of Service-Learning . The project “The Duncan Dance Research Center in focus” implemented by Postgraduate students and their professor Marlen Mouliou (Assistant Professor, Department of History & Archaeology, School of Philosophy).

In the upcoming European Forum in Bucharest, the two NKUA teams will face their counterparts from the Universities of Bucharest, Sapienza-Rome, Aix-Marseille and the Autonomous University of Madrid.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
