Under the aegis of the Department of History and Archaeology[1] of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens the workshop entitled “Representations of Arion in European Art” [2] took place at Molyvos (Lesvos) on July 31st 2022.
The event was organized by Assistant Professor Ianthi Asimakopoulou[3] (NKUA) (fig.1) in collaboration with The Other Aegean and Molyvos Tourism Assosiation. In the workshop participated[4] the prominent scholars Professor Fernando Marías (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), Professor Anna Tahintzi (The Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston), Professor Ioannis Petropoulos (Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece Harvard University, Democritus University of Thrace), Dr Jim Harris (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford), Assistant Professor José Riello (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), Dr Rembrandt Duits (Warburg Institute) (fig.2).
The workshop held at Arion’s birthplace (ancient Methymna) focused on depictions inspired by the ancient citharode in various artistic media from the Renaissance to the 19th century. The participants highlighted the cultural and historical context (Italy, Germany, Holland, France) in which the artworks were created, bringing myth to life through a variety of readings. The multiple layers of meaning of Arion’s story fueled a fruitful dialogue and investigation that will be continued in the forthcoming collective volume.
