Distinctions for the NKUA’s Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens participated with a four-member team in the South Eastern European Mathematical Olympiad for University Students (SEEMOUS), which took place from 7 to 12 March 2023 in Struga, North Macedonia.

The team’s performance was as follows:

  1. Giannakaras Dimitrios, silver medallist
  2. Emmanouil Dimitrios, silver medallist
  3. Charalambous Ioannis, silver medallist
  4. Papanikolaou Nikolaos, participant

Accompanying the team was Nikos Goumas, a past medal-winning postgraduate student at NKUA’s Department of Mathematics.

The team’s travel and accommodation expenses were paid for by NKUA and EY – Greece. True to its commitment to fostering a better working environment, EY actively contributed so that the Department of Mathematics students who took part in the competition had the chance to fully explore their potential, develop their skills, and gain valuable experience and insights that will aid them in continuing their studies and advancing their careers in the future.

Beginning in the academic year 2006-2007, SEEMOUS is a mathematics competition open to first- and second-year students throughout Southeastern Europe. For 5 hours, participants compete in four problems drawn from Infinitesimal Calculus, Linear Algebra, Basic Algebra, Real Analysis, Combinatorics, and Number Theory. Each year, faculty members at the Department of Mathematics and senior students who have previously excelled in mathematics competitions prepare those who want to participate.

Since the inception of such competitions, the NKUA’s Department of Mathematics has had a long history of success and, from 2010 onwards, a consistent presence with first places and gold medal finishes [1]. Every year, the Department attracts numerous students with passion, love, and aptitude for mathematical research. Most of them continue their studies at the best Universities in Europe and the US on full scholarships.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
