‘The Lancet’: Important study on the treatment of stroke with the participation of Associate Professor at the NKUA’s School of Medicine, P. Papanagiotou

An all-important study on the treatment of stroke appeared in the prestigious journal The Lancet, co-authored by, among others, the faculty member at the NKUA’s School of Medicine, Associate Professor Panagiotis Papanagiotou of the 1st Department of Radiology (Aretaieio Hospital).

The study highlights the beneficial effects of mechanical thrombectomy in CVA patients treated at a later time window, expanding the indications for treatment. Thrombectomy resulted in an impressive 18.4% increase in the proportion of patients who regained the ability to walk unaided within three months after stroke and a significant decrease in mortality rates by almost 20%.

Mr Papanagiotou is a key member of the scientific team at the University Centre for Interventional Stroke Treatment of the Aretaieio/Aiginiteio/Alexandra Hospitals.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
