Andreas Papapetropoulos, Professor of Pharmacology and Chair of the Department of Pharmacy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, has been awarded the title of doctor honoris causa from Semmelweis University. Based in Budapest and founded in 1769, Semmelweis University is Hungary’s oldest and largest institute of higher education, with a distinguished record of research and teaching spanning over 250 years.

The event took place in the university’s historic library, attended by the Rector, Professor of Cardiology Béla Merkely, the Vice-Rectors, and the Deans of the university’s Faculties, as well as many academics and other guests, alongside a representative of the Greek Embassy.

During the ceremony, Professor Péter Nyirády, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, presented the honouree’s scholarly contributions and personal qualities. In particular, he drew attention to Professor Papapetropoulos’s research on the molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular drug action and the role of gaseous mediators as signalling molecules.
In his response, Professor Papapetropoulos spoke of his long-standing and close collaboration with colleagues from Semmelweis University and Hungary more broadly, which has resulted in numerous publications in international journals and books.
