Associate Professor Stella Tsani has been invited as an expert contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Dr. Stella Tsani, Associate Professor at the Department of Economics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, has been invited as an expert contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 7th Assessment Report (AR7) scoping meeting, specifically for Working Group III (WGIII), which focuses on mitigation of climate change.  Stella Tsani is one of the 250 invited experts from all disciplines and over 70 countries to come together in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 9-13 December to draft the outlines of the three Working Group contributions to the IPCC AR7.

Together with other leading scientists in their field, Stella Tsani contributes to “the critical first step in shaping the contents of the next IPCC report assessing the science related to climate change” as described by the IPCC Chair Jim Skea.

Dr. Stella Tsani’s participation is a significant academic engagement with policy implications as the scoping meeting is a critical part of the report’s development process, where experts and stakeholders discuss the structure, key questions, and focus areas for the upcoming report. The AR7 Scoping Meeting delivers Working Group-specific draft outlines contributions to the AR7. These will be circulated to Governments and submitted for consideration and agreement to sessions of the three IPCC Working Groups and the 62nd Session of the IPCC, scheduled to be held in February 2025.

The Bureaux of the IPCC Working Groups, along with the IPCC Chair in respect of the Synthesis Report, have selected the experts to participate in this meeting, taking into consideration nominations received from Governments, Observer Organizations and Bureau members. Dr. Stella Tsani has been nominated by the Global Young Academy and the International Science Council, both of which she is a member of. Her nomination and involvement in the IPCC AR7 scoping meeting highlights her policy-oriented impact-driven expertise in areas such as sustainable development, energy policy, economic transitions, and resource management, all of which are central to the work of WGIII. Her contributions are expected to help shape the report’s analysis on the economic, financial, and policy transformations needed to mitigate climate change, particularly through sustainable practices and innovations in energy and natural resource management.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
