NKUA Career Days 2022 were organized by the Institution’s Career Office with great success

The Career Office of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens successfully organized the multi-level action ‘NKUA Career Days 2022’ from December 12 to 14, 2022. This year’s events took on a hybrid format, combining online activities through the use and exploitation of a customized platform with in-person occasions held in the Propylaea, i.e., our University’s Main Building.

During the three days of this action, over 2,000 NKUA students and graduates had the opportunity to meet with 31 enterprises and organizations, learn about the employment and career opportunities they provide, and apply for a job through approximately 400 interviews arranged and held in them. They also learnt about labour market developments while participating in intriguing panel discussions with market and business leaders. It is important to note that they prepared for involvement in all the above processes by attending specialist career guidance and entrepreneurial workshops. The main event took place in person and featured a presentation of the services offered by the Career Office to students and graduates of the Institution, the new Information System of the Office, and the results of the first after 15 years Institutional Survey on the employability of NKUA graduates.

The Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Meletios-Athanasios Dimopoulos, addressed the opening of the action, saying, among other things, that: ‘NKUA Career Days 2022 is a critical action, highlighting the University Authorities’ and the teaching and administrative staff’s concern for assisting our graduates’ efforts to enter the labour market and have the career they desire’. The Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs and Scientist Responsible for the NKUA’s Career Office, Professor Dimitrios Karadimas, emphasized that: ‘In the last three years or so, significant amount of time and effort has gone into reorganizing career counselling services for our Institution’s students and graduates, the focus being on reopening and revitalizing the Career Office.’ He also underlined that: ‘NKUA Career Days foster a two-way relationship between the academic community and enterprises/organizations, which we believe can only lead to positive outcomes.’

Next, the Assistant Professor in Career Guidance and Career Decision-making at the Department of Educational Studies of the NKUA’s School of Philosophy, Ms Katerina Argyropoulou, presented the role of the NKUA’s Career Office and the challenges it faces in the contemporary academic environment. The Secretary of the Quality Assurance Unit and Administrator of the Career Office, Mr Konstantinos Bourletidis, focused his presentation on the association between quality assurance procedures on the one hand and the services provided by the Career Office, the requirements of the legal framework, and the obligations arising from Greece’s membership in the European Higher Education Area on the other.

Mr Aristeides Lorentzos and Ms Amalia Anastasoglou, Career Counsellors at the NKUA Career Office, gave a detailed presentation on the counselling and career guidance services provided to students and graduates of the Institution, and Ms Marianthi Katsika, an Entrepreneurship Counsellor at the NKUA Career Office, gave a presentation on the entrepreneurship counselling services.

Then, the NKUA Career Office’s Communications Manager and member of its administrative support team, Ms Victoria Kasviki, gave a presentation about the Office’s information actions on issues related to studies, the planning and execution of webinars by it, and its collaboration with schools and other entities coordinating career guidance actions either locally or nationwide. Mr Matthaios Pantouvakis, the NKUA Career Office’s Coordinator of Actions and Initiatives, discussed the ongoing plan for networking and collaboration with potential employers and graduates. So far, this strategy has resulted in prominent enterprises and other entities that promote employment and career guidance supporting and participating in the NKUA Career Days.

The new Information System, which will be launched in the coming weeks and will significantly upgrade the services provided, was presented by Mr Konstantinos Alvertos, IT Officer at the NKUA Career Office. Among other things, the system will collect and index data, automate job posting by enterprises, store graduates’ CVs, allow enterprises and organizations to find candidates, and improve networking with the other Universities’ Career Offices. The first day concluded with the Senior Human Capital Consultant at ICAP, Mr Thanasis Sotakis, presenting the Institutional Survey on the employability of NKUA graduates.

Over the next two days, the participating enterprises held online presentations focused on the working environment and employment opportunities they offer, while NKUA students and graduates attended employment interviews at these enterprises. The event also included four round tables with recognized experts, market executives, and successful entrepreneurs who discussed the following topics: What social skills do employers want most? Are family businesses a safe career path or do they trap family members into a predetermined choice? Should one pursue a career as an entrepreneur or an executive? How difficult or even complicated are the hiring procedures used by enterprises?

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
