Collaboration between the NKUA’s School of Medicine and the Jenny Karezi Foundation to upgrade palliative care in Greece

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), its School of Medicine, and the Jenny Karezi Foundation decided on January 10, 2024, to upgrade palliative care in our country by forming a partnership that will see the Jenny Karezi Palliative Care Unit expanded and developed at a clinical, research, and educational level.

More specifically, the collaboration between the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, its School of Medicine, the Jenny Karezi Palliative Care Unit, and the namesake Foundation will ensure high-level specialized palliative care for patients with serious and/or chronic medical conditions from across Greece.

Further development is expected for:

i) The Jenny Karezi Palliative Care Unit’s Outpatient Clinic, where specialized scientists work daily to relieve patients’ physical and psychological symptoms (resulting either from the progression of the disease or the treatment received) while addressing the social and emotional needs of patients and their families and thus helping them achieve the best possible quality of life.

ii) The Day Care, by providing comfort and convenience to patients and their families.

iii) The Palliative Care for Children and Adolescents, which will be staffed by an interdisciplinary team of specialized healthcare professionals (paediatricians, psychologists, nurses) to provide integrated management of the physical, psychological, social, and emotional needs of young people suffering from serious and/or chronic medical conditions and become a Centre for Specialization and Research in Child and Adolescent Palliative Care.

iv) The Educational Centre, which will provide training and specialization at a theoretical and clinical level to healthcare professionals from all over Greece (doctors, nurses, psychologists) as well as to graduates in the Social Sciences and Humanities.

The Jenny Karezi Foundation was established in 1992 in memory of the great and unforgettable actress Jenny Karezi, who wished for the development of palliative care in our country. It is a Civic, Non-profit Organization and the first entity in Greece that, to this day, solely provides specialized palliative care to patients with serious and/or chronic medical conditions through the support of the Jenny Karezi Palliative Care Unit.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
