Cooperation between NKUA and the Northwestern Polytechnical University of China

As part of a Memorandum of Understanding between the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), faculty members from the NKUA’s Department of History and Archaeology travelled to China from 10 to 20 November 2023, at the invitation of NPU. The NKUA’s delegation consisted of Giorgos Vavouranakis (Professor of Prehistoric Aegean and Director of the Laboratory of Archaeology and the History of Art), Platon Petridis (Professor of Byzantine Archaeology and Director of the Museum of Archaeology and the History of Art), Yiannis Papadatos (Professor of Prehistoric Archaeology and Director of the MSc in Archaeological Science), and Anastasia Drandaki (Associate Professor of Byzantine Archaeology and Art).

The NKUA faculty members were given guided tours of the NPU facilities in Xi’an and Taicang by Shi Yong and Wen Yadi, members of the teaching and research staff, as well as by dignitaries at the Dean’s Office of NPU, with whom they talked about deepening the research collaboration between the two Universities in terms of interconnecting their laboratories and developing joint research actions in areas of interest, especially ancient materials and technologies of stone and metal processing, as well as pottery production in Prehistoric, Ancient, and Byzantine Times.

NPU and the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology located in Xi’an hosted a series of lectures by the NKUA faculty members on the University’s archaeological research activities. The Greek delegation met the Institute’s President, Directors of major archaeological excavations, and Museum Curators (Shimao, Erlitou, Archaeological Museum of Luoyang, Liangzhu), with whom they discussed potential research collaborations.

The NKUA’s visit to NPU, China, was covered by the Consulate General of the Hellenic Republic in Shanghai as well as the local media.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
