International Research Workshop “Data flows? Making and Sharing Data in Biomedical Research: Between Local and Cross-Border Practices” [10-11/04/2024]

An International Research Workshop will take place on April 10 and 11, in the context of the research project “Contextualizing biobanking in Greece: histories, practices, discourses — BIO-CONTEXT”, which has been funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) in the framework of the Action “2nd Call for H.F.R.I. Research Projects to support Post-doctoral Researchers” and hosted in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The two-day Workshop is organized by the BIO-CONTEXT research team, consisting of Katerina Vlantoni, Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science-Principal Investigator of the project and postdoctoral researchers George Zoukas and Yulie Foka-Kavalieraki.

The Workshop entitled “Data flows? Making and Sharing Data in Biomedical Research: Between Local and Cross-Border Practices” will take place in a hybrid format, in the lecture room of the Historical Archive of NKUA (Skoufa 45, Athens) and through the Webex platform. Researchers, from all over the world, will present papers focusing on diverse issues regarding the creation and the mobilization of biological specimen and data in biomedical research, based on historical and Science & Technology Studies (STS) approaches.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
