A delegation from Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) of Korea at NKUA

On Monday, 16 September 2024, a delegation from Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) of Korea, consisting of the President, Dr O-bong Yang, the Vice-President for International Affairs, Dr Hwa-Rim Cho, the Deputy Vice-President for International Affairs, Dr Park Seong-Yong, and the Coordinator at the Office of International Affairs, Mr Isaiah Kraus, visited NKUA. Welcoming the foreign delegation, on the part of NKUA, were the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, International Relations, and Extroversion, Professor Sophia Papaioannou, and the Head of the Directorate of Public Relations and History, Ms S.-A. Sakellariou.

The Korean academics expressed interest in collaborating on Archaeology, Philosophy, Foreign Languages, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, the Environment, Political Science, and Economics through faculty and student exchanges. They focused on two JBNU programmes, namely the semester-based ‘Exchange Student Programme’ and the ‘Feeling Korea’ short-term cultural experience programme, for which they desire to enrol students from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The Vice-Rector, Professor Sophia Papaioannou, gave a thorough overview of NKUA’s Programmes of Study and its standing in global rankings and went on to express our University’s interest in signing a Memorandum of Understanding.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
