Distinctions for the NKUA’s Department of Mathematics at the International Mathematics Competition SEEMOUS

The Department of Mathematics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens participated with a three-member team in the International Mathematics Competition SEEMOUS, which took place from 9 to 14 April 2024 in Iași, Romania.

The team’s performance was as follows:

  1. Mamouzelos Themelis, silver medallist,
  2. Georgeles Giorgos, bronze medallist, and
  3. Petrakis Manolis, bronze medallist.

Beginning in the academic year 2006-2007, SEEMOUS (South-Eastern European Mathematics Olympiad for University Students) is a mathematics competition open to first- and second-year students throughout South-Eastern Europe. For 5 hours, participants compete in four problems drawn from Infinitesimal Calculus, Linear Algebra, Basic Algebra, Real Analysis, Combinatorics, and Number Theory. Each year, faculty members at the NKUA’s Department of Mathematics and senior students who have previously excelled in mathematics competitions prepare those who wish to participate.

Since the inception of such competitions, the NKUA’s Department of Mathematics has had a long history of success and, from 2010 onwards, a consistent presence with first places and gold medal finishes [1]. Every year, the Department attracts numerous students with passion, love, and aptitude for mathematical research. Most of them continue their studies at the best Universities in Europe and the US on full scholarships.
