Harvard University and the University of Athens Complete Third Intensive Programme in Clinical Epidemiology

The Third Intensive English-taught Programme, Clinical Epidemiology: From Theory to Application, concluded on 16 October 2026.

The programme forms part of a memorandum of understanding signed by Harvard University and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in December 2023. The agreement provides for collaboration between the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Department of Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Medical Statistics at the University of Athens’ School of Medicine.

The programme aims to provide postgraduate-level training in clinical epidemiology, drawing on the expertise of both institutions. Teaching was delivered by the Heads of the respective Departments, Professor Albert Hofman of Harvard University and Professor Pagona Lagiou of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
