JOINT MASTER’S DEGREE
IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE ERASMUS MUNDUS PROGRAMME OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
The Joint Master’s Degree in South European Studies (EUROSUD)
at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
welcomes its new students
The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) recently welcomed the new postgraduate students, holders of European Union scholarships, who will study with us during the Spring Semester in the framework of the “International Master in South European Studies (EUROSUD)”. The 25 EUROSUD students at NKUA this year come from 16 countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
The “International Master in South European Studies (EUROSUD)” is part of the EU’s Erasmus Mundus programme, which is different from the better known Erasmus+. The goal of this programme is to extend international academic mobility beyond Europe, to students from all continents, through the creation of Joint Master’s Degrees.
The “International Master in South European Studies” was created by a consortium of 5 European universities, coordinated by the University of Glasgow. As well as NKUA, the other partners are the Autonomous University of Madrid, the University of Aix-Marseilles and LLUIS University (Rome). The University of Lisbon participates as a Key Associate Partner. In 2018, the consortium won funding for 5 years through a highly competitive Erasmus Mundus bid. The International Master opened its doors to its first students in the academic year 2019-2020.
The “International Master in South European Studies (EUROSUD)” is the only postgraduate programme worldwide to focus exclusively on the study and teaching of Southern Europe, and aims to extend academic knowledge about our region. The two-year Programme examines the region from a multidisciplinary perspective, combining political science, history, political economy and sociology. The Programme offers 120 ECTS and includes three international mobility periods. In the first semester, all students are based in Glasgow. In the second semester, students choose between Athens and Madrid. For the second year (third and fourth semesters), there are four options: Athens, Madrid, Aix-Marseilles, and Rome. In their second year, students also attend a Winter School organised by the University of Lisbon.
In 2019-23, a total of 71 EUROSUD students have chosen to study at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. They come from 37 different countries: Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Georgia, Greece, Guatemala, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Netherlands, Nigeria, Uzbekistan, Palestine, Paraguay, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, Philippines, United Kingdom, and the USA.
At NKUA the International Master is coordinated by Associate Professor Susannah Verney and students follow the courses of the “Master’s Degree in Saoutheast European Studies: Politics, History, Economics” in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration.
