At the 2025 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) held in Paris, France (July 18-24), a team of five Greek high-school students distinguished themselves among over 400 participants from more than 80 countries, earning a bronze medal and an honourable mention.
Georgios Kagiampakis, from the Model High School of Heraklion, was awarded the bronze medal, while Promitheas Nikou, representing the ‘Mantoulides’ Schools, received the honourable mention. The Greek team also included Antonios-Aggelos Georgoulis (3rd High School of Chios), Myrsini Dimitropoulou (4th High School of Pyrgos), and Danai-Elpiniki Prousalidi (Evangeliki Model High School of Smyrna).
The Greek team’s preparation was led by Professor Emeritus George Tombras, Department of Physics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), and President of the Hellenic Physics Society for Science and Education (HPSSE), together with Dr Panagiotis Tsakonas, Laboratory Teaching Staff at the Department of Informatics, University of Piraeus, and a member of HPSSE. Accompanying the students were Dr Tsakonas and Haris Nikolaou, a second-year student at the National Technical University of Athens and bronze medallist at the 2023 IPhO in Tokyo.
Students representing Greece at the International Physics Olympiad are selected exclusively through the Panhellenic Physics Competitions ‘Aristotle’, and undergo an intensive preparation programme hosted by the NKUA’s Department of Physics, which focuses on theoretical training and hands-on laboratory work.
The competitions are organized annually by the NKUA’s Department of Physics and HPSSE in schools across the country, with the approval of the Institute of Education Policy (IEP) and the Hellenic Ministry of Education. They are conducted on a voluntary, nonprofit basis, marked by transparency, public posting of problems and solutions, and the highest standards of ethics in science and education.
The scientific/steering committee of the Panhellenic Competition ‘Aristotle’, jointly run by the NKUA’s Department of Physics and HPSEE, congratulates all five students on their achievements and expresses its sincere gratitude to our generous sponsor:
