The internationally acclaimed American economist and Professor at Columbia University, USA, Mr Joseph Stiglitz, who in 2001 received the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, was an invited speaker at an event of the NKUA’s Department of Economics, which took place on 18 October 2023, following an initiative by NKUA Professor Mr Andreas Papandreou.

On behalf of the University Authorities, the Rector of NKUA, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, welcomed the distinguished Nobel Prize winner. Also present at the lecture were the former prime ministers of Greece, Messrs George Papandreou and Lucas Papademos, the NKUA’s Vice-Rector for Finance and Development, Professor Aristeidis Samitas, the member of the Administration Council of NKUA, Professor Dimitris Kenourgios, the Dean of the NKUA’s School of Economics and Political Sciences, Professor Nikolaos Eriotis, the Chair of the NKUA’s Department of Economics, Professor Stelios Kotsios, the Emeritus Professors of NKUA, Ms Louka Katseli and Mr Panagiotis Petrakis, et al.

The title of Professor Stiglitz’s lecture was ‘Green Industrial Policy: Saving the Planet Without a Trade War’.

Green Industrial Policy is now at the epicentre of international scientific interest and—among other things—seeks sustainable development and environmental protection without reigniting trade wars, but rather by promoting renewable energy sources, supporting a sustainable and circular economy, advancing the research and development of green technologies, and fostering international cooperation and diplomacy in the above fields.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
