Memorandum of Understanding between the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Hellenic Capital Market Commission

On Thursday, 23 November 2023, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) set out a Memorandum of Understanding; signing the Memorandum were the Rector of NKUA, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, and the President of HCMC, Dr Vassiliki Lazarakou.

Drafted with the assistance of the NKUA’s Department of Business Administration for a joint effort at the educational and research levels, the Memorandum marks the culmination of a long-standing and multi-level cooperation between the two contracting parties, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Hellenic Capital Market Commission, and ultimately aims to enhance applied research, scientific knowledge, and the exposure of students to simulation environments, all of which contribute to the goal of Financial Literacy.

The Financial Literacy project seeks to spread, disseminate, and deliver financial knowledge, financial education, and—in the end—the skills associated with all the above. The objective is to guarantee that citizens, equipped with the information and abilities necessary to know and understand the economy, the usefulness of financial products, and the way the markets work, can make the best decisions possible about managing their financial resources and achieving financial well-being. The project is indeed a positive contribution by NKUA and HCMC to Greek society.

The parties agree, within the context of the applicable legislation under which each of the two operates, to pursue and encourage mutual contact and cooperation among their scientific and other staff members, as well as external collaborators, in all kinds of research or educational projects, workshops, and programmes, with a view to implementing joint scientific, research, and educational actions.

Also present at the signing of the Memorandum were the General Director of HCMC, Ms Kalliopi Benetatou, the member of the NKUA’s Administration Council, Professor Dimitrios Kenourgios, the NKUA’s Vice-Rector for Finance and Development, Professor Aristeidis Samitas, and the Chair of the NKUA’s Department of Business Administration, Professor Dimitrios Thomakos.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
