The Municipality of Nicosia officially opened its new, state-of-the-art student halls of residence on Monday, 3 November 2025. The halls, now home to students from the Cyprus Branch of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, were inaugurated in the presence of the Rector, Professor Gerasimos Siasos.
Among those addressing the event were the Minister of Finance of Cyprus, Makis Keravnos, who performed the opening ceremony, and the Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos.
His Grace, Bishop Gregory of Mesaoria, officiated the traditional blessing to begin the ceremony.
Also present were Chrysanthos Fakas, Deputy Mayor for Nicosia; members of the Municipal Council; politicians and state officials; representatives from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; and students.
The halls of residence are not a new development for the area, but rather the outcome of the restoration of an existing housing complex. The structure has been completely reimagined to blend seamlessly with the historical surroundings and cultural identity of the walled city of old Nicosia.

According to the Municipality of Nicosia, the halls have been designed to meet modern student accommodation standards, with a total capacity of 50 rooms, one of which has been specifically adapted for persons with disabilities.
All rooms are self-contained, contemporary, and fully furnished.

The project contributes to the significant regeneration of the historic city centre and reinforces the presence of University students in the area.

Co-funded by the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Facility – NextGenerationEU, as part of the ‘CyprUs_Tomorrow’ initiative, it plays a pivotal role in the Municipality’s strategic plan to revitalize the walled city of old Nicosia while also supporting the development of affordable, high-quality student accommodation.
Shortly after the ceremony, Simos Drousiotis, the project’s architect, led a tour of the halls of residence, detailing his design philosophy, architectural interventions, and all methods involved in restoring the housing complex.

The event closed with a welcome street party for the new residents.
