NKUA climbs to the highest place ever achieved by a Greek University in US News Best Global Universities Rankings 2024-2025

A significant rise in the individual subjects: 38th place worldwide in Cardiology

US News & World Report Media Company has recently published the results of its Best Global Universities Rankings for 2024-2025. Best Global Universities have dominated University rankings in the US for years and are currently in the top 7 of rankings internationally. In this 10th consecutive annual edition of the US News Best Global Universities Rankings, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens placed 215th out of 2,250 Universities. Our University has climbed 35 places from last year to the highest place ever achieved by a Greek Higher Educational Institution in all the editions of the US News Best Global Universities Rankings.

At the same time, NKUA ranked 1st among the 12 Greek Universities in the table. Other Greek Universities ranked in the top 3 nationwide are Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (394th position overall) and the National Technical University of Athens (508th position overall). On a European level, NKUA ranked 81st among the 715 European Universities in the table.

At this point, we should mention that in the latest edition of the Best Global Universities Rankings, NKUA placed high globally in 25 subjects as opposed to 22 in 2023-2024. More specifically, in Cardiac & Cardiovascular Systems, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Infectious Diseases, our University entered the top 100 worldwide.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
