NKUA, Sorbonne University, and Harvard: 1st Workshop on Computational Biology

The 1st Workshop on Computational Biology took place from 6 to 11 April 2025 at the main building of the University of Athens. Organized by the Master’s Programme in Integrative Biology and Physiology of Sorbonne University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, in collaboration with the University of Athens’ Departments of Biology (Postgraduate Programme in Bioinformatics-Computational Biology), Mathematics, and Informatics & Telecommunications, this 1st Workshop was part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in February 2024 in Athens between Sorbonne University and NKUA. Harvard University, USA, also participated in the event.

The Workshop, which brought together 18 students from both Universities, included, on the part of NKUA, Associate Professor Vassiliki Iconomidou, Dr Nikolaos Papandreou, Dr Zoi Litou, Dr Ourania Konstanti (Department of Biology), Assistant Professor Fotios Siannis, PhD candidate Stylianos Tzortzakis (Department of Mathematics), Professor Emeritus Vassilis Zissimopoulos, Professor Ioannis Emiris, Dr Ioannis Chamodrakas, Dr John Vaxevanakis (Department of Informatics and Telecommunications), and, on the part of Sorbonne University, the Vice-Dean for International Studies at the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering, Professor Sonia Karabina, and Professor at the same Faculty, Hedi Soula. Dr Kalotina Machini from Harvard Medical School delivered the keynote speech.

In attendance at the closing ceremony were the Attaché for Scientific and University Cooperation of the French Institute of Greece, Mr Matthieu Abgrall, and his Deputy, Ms Katerina Spyropoulou.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
