One-day conference to mark the 50th anniversary of the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus: Trauma, Intergenerational Transmission, Grief, and Recovery

On Friday, 21 February 2025 (16:00-21:00), the Cyprus Cultural Centre ‘The House of Cyprus’ (2A Xenofontos St, 105 57 Athens) organized an academic One-day conference under the auspices of the Department of Psychology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in collaboration with the NKUA’s Laboratory of Cypriot Studies, entitled ‘50 Years From the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus: Trauma, Intergenerational Transmission, Grief, and Recovery’.

The Conference was held with the support of the Department of Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus and the in-kind sponsorship of Gutenberg-Dardanos Publications.

Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the NKUA’s Department of Psychology, Dr Antonia Papastylianou, coordinated and arranged the Conference and the programme, which included panelists and moderators from Cyprus, Greece, and Denmark. For the first time, papers related to the Conference’s topic were made available to the public, who also heard personal stories from people who suffered war trauma and discussed how they coped by converting it into art and contribution to society. Addressing the Conference on behalf of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was Professor of Byzantine Musicology and Psaltic Art at the School of Philosophy’s Department of Music Studies and Member of the NKUA’s Administration Council, Dr Achilleas Chaldaeakes. The filled to capacity event hall of the House of Cyprus demonstrated the interest of scientists in the field of Psychology, students at our University, and the general public in the theme of the Conference.
