Pharos Summit 2022: Greek-US Collaboration in Higher Education

The opening event of the Pharos Summit 2022: Greek-US Collaboration in Higher Education took place on the 7th of November 2022 at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

It was preceded on the 6th of November by an Introductory Workshop for Greek and American delegates also held at SNFCC.

The celebratory event for the considerable achievements of the Greek-US Collaboration in Higher Education featured a variety of new possibilities and opportunities. Government Officials, Rectors and Vice-Rectors, Members of the Faculty, and University Students spoke at the event.

In the afternoon of the same day, the Rector of NKUA, Professor Meletios-Athanasios Dimopoulos, the Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Professor Dimitrios Karadimas, several Deans, and many Faculty Members of NKUA received the delegates from the American Universities at the Great Hall of the NKUA’s Central Building. The guests attended a presentation on the activity of NKUA, the Institution’s international relations, and the potential fields for the development of joint actions.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
