Participation of the NKUA’s School of Education in the organization of the Conference of the International Academy of the History of Science entitled ‘Science and Human Values’ [12-15/9/23]

The School of Education of NKUA participates in the organization of the 2nd Conference of the International Academy of the History of Science entitled ‘Science and Human Values’, which will take place from 12 to 15 September 2023.

The opening session will be on 12 September 2023 at 09:30 at the Great Hall of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Main building, 30 Panepistimiou st, Athens). All other sessions will be at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (48 Vassileos Konstantinou Ave., Athens).

The Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Professor Gerasimos Siasos cordially invites you to the opening ceremony of the 2nd conference of the International Academy of the History of Science on: Science and Human Values organized by the School of Education of the University of Athens and the National Hellenic Research Foundation.

The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 12 September 2023 at 09.30 a.m. at the Great Hall of the University of Athens (main building, 30 Panepistimiou Street).

The proceedings of the conference, which will run from 12 to 15 September, will take place at the premises of the National Hellenic Research Foundation (48 Vasileos Konstantinou Street).

Welcome address by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, International Relations and Extroversion, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Sophia Papaioannou.
Addresses and opening remarks by:
− the Dean of the School of Education, Professor Thomas Babalis
− the Chair of the Department of Primary Education, Professor Constantinos Skordoulis
− the Chair of the Department of Early Childhood Education, Professor Vasilios Tsafos
Opening of the conference by the Chair of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, Professor Dimosthenis Sarigiannis.

Introductory speech by the former Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Professor Emeritus Kostas Gavroglu, entitled: «Is freedom of research in the humanities under threat?»

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
