The 1st ‘We Are UoA’ Festival of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens soon to open its doors [19-21/10/2024]

The 1stWe Are UoA Festival of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is now a reality, and will open its doors in a few days (19-21/10/2024) at the Propylaea, the historic main building of NKUA (30 Panepistimiou St, Athens).

It is with great joy and anticipation that the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, the Members of the Administration Council, the Vice-Rectors, and the Members of the University Senate expect to welcome the entire community of the oldest and biggest University in the country—particularly its students—in a three-day open event including, among other things:

  • A grand opening, with the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, extending a warm welcome to all, at the Great Hall of the NKUA’s main building, on Saturday, 19 October 2024, at 12:00.
  • An awards ceremony for the students who distinguished themselves in sport and the candidates who were the first in terms of score to enter each of the NKUA’s Departments (Saturday, 19 October 2024, at 18:00).
  • Open Days (19-21/10, 12:00-19:00 Ioannis DrakopoulosAmphitheatre)  for prospective students, their families, and the wider community, who will have the opportunity to speak with faculty members from the forty-two (42) Departments of NKUA and get information about the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes of Study. This will be a chance for everyone to explore on-site the family of our country’s oldest and biggest University, meet the academic and administrative staff—and its current students—and discover the NKUA’s diverse programmes of study. Everyone should take advantage of our Open Days to get to know the NKUA’s community, investigate the prospects that lie ahead, and plan their future with us.
  • Great Talks entitled ‘Dialogues – Διάλογοι’ under the theme ‘Links – Συνδέσεις’ (Sunday 20/10/2024, 12:00-15:00 & 17:00-19:00, ‘Alkis Argyriadis’ Amphitheatre). The Dialogues of the University of Athens is an inspired action that will also serve as a real-time discussion platform. Their goal is to provoke thought and promote the exchange of views among speakers from various fields, who share their ideas, stories, and innovative insights, encouraging the University of Athens community to interact with new concepts and thus foster innovation, creativity, and extroversion.
  • Career Days (19-21/10/2024, Administration Council Hall, 15:00-19:00). A three-day event organized in collaboration with the Career Office of the University of Athens (https://career.uoa.gr) to provide current students and graduates with a unique opportunity to connect to over 40 top companies across various sectors. Throughout the action, participants will have the chance to interact directly with potential employers, discover career paths, and gain valuable insights into the latest market trends.

Via networking sessions, the University of Athens Career Days seek to empower a new generation of professionals to navigate the labour market, develop high-demand skills, and make informed career choices.

  • Researcher’s Day (Monday 21/10/2024, 15:00-19:00, ‘Alkis Argyriadis’ Amphitheatre) The Deans of the University of Athens will be presenting the research work of their Schools. The necessity of modern research is evident in every aspect of our lives. It serves as the foundation for sustainable development and creates a brighter future for human beings. Contemporary research is critical to the growth of science, technology, and society as it forms the basis for understanding new phenomena, creating innovative solutions, and improving our quality of life.
  • Welcome event for the first-year students of the University of Athens with a grand party on the square in front of the Propylaea on Saturday 19/10/2024, at 20:30, featuring a DJ set by Alexandros Christopoulos & Izo Darko.
  • Graduation Party on Sunday 20/10/2024, at 20:30, on the square in front of the Propylaea. A concert with tunes from the Greek musical tradition performed by the Department of Music Studies (with the participation of the Dance Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA).
  • Reunion Party on Monday 21/10/2024, at 20:30, on the square in front of the Propylaea. A concert with the ‘Music Odyssey’ group of the Department of Music Studies with the participation of Nikos Portokaloglou.

In addition, the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA (POFPA) has planned the following actions:

Saturday 19/10/2024

12:00 Opening of a photography exhibition at the Propylaea.

13:00-16:00 Open shooting during the Festival by the Cinema Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA.

14:00-15:30 Presentation of Greek traditional costumes from the cloakroom of the Dance Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA at the educational and cultural hall ‘IRIDA’.

15:00-19:00 Open theatre workshop by the Theatre Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA at the small theatre located in the basement of the ‘Kostis Palamas’ Cultural Centre of NKUA (Maximum number of participants: 50).

16:00-19:30 Open class of Greek traditional dances by the Dance Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA in the basement of the University Club (15 Ippokratous St, Athens).

18:00-21:30 Open class of photography by the Photography Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA. We will get shots of people at the Festival to print and present them at the photography exhibition (Maximum number of participants: 50. Students at NKUA will be given priority).

Sunday 20/10/2024

12:00-15:00 Analogue printing workshop at the darkroom of the University Club and exhibition of the prints at the Propylaea. The whole event will be based on the shots taken during the open class on Saturday 19 October (Participation by filling in a form. Students at NKUA will be given priority. Maximum number of participants: 25).

12:30-14:30 Presentation of a filmed theatre performance by the 1st Group of the Theatre Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA at the educational and cultural hall ‘IRIDA’ (the recording and editing was done by the Cinema Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA).

15:00-18:00 Cyanotype workshop at an open outdoor space of the NKUA’s main building and exhibition of the prints at the Propylaea (Participation by filling in a form. Students at NKUA will be given priority. Maximum number of participants: 30).

15:00-19:00 Open theatre workshop by the Theatre Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA at the small theatre located in the basement of the ‘Kostis Palamas’ Cultural Centre of NKUA (Maximum number of participants: 50).

Monday 21/10/2024

12:00-14:00 Screening of the film ‘Death of a Bureaucrat – La muerte de un burocrata’ (Comedy, 1966) by the Cinema Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA at the educational and cultural hall ‘IRIDA.

14:00-17:00 Screening and presentation of the film editing process by the Cinema Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA at the University Club.

17:00-19:00 Presentation of a filmed theatre performance by the 2nd Group of the Theatre Section of the Students’ Cultural Club of NKUA.

Finally, during the Festival, there will be guided tours of the Propylaea to introduce everyone to this magnificent and imposing building of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Designed by Danish architect Hans Christian Hansen, with the foundation stone being laid on 2 July 1839, the Propylaea aimed from the very beginning to serve as the central point of the then newly established University of Athens.

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
