University of Athens—Cyprus Branch Achieves Full Compliance

The accreditation process for the Cyprus Branch of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has now been fully completed.

In its initial phase, the Branch will comprise 4 Schools and 8 Departments, located in two cities: Nicosia and Larnaca.

More specifically, the Schools and Departments are as follows:

i) School of Health Sciences (Nicosia):

Department of Medicine

– Department of Nursing

ii) School of Economics and Political Sciences:

– Department of Economics (Nicosia)

Department of Business Administration (Nicosia)

Department of Ports Management and Shipping (Larnaca)

iii) School of Philosophy:

Department of Psychology (Larnaca)

English-taught BA Programme in the Archaeology, History, and Literature of Ancient Greece (BAAG)(Nicosia)

iv) School of Education (Nicosia):

Department of Paedagogy and Primary Education

Admissions for the Department of Medicine are now open

Admissions are now open for the Department of Medicine, with classes starting by the end of October 2025.

Eligible candidates who have expressed interest will be invited for an interview during the week 6-10 October 2025.

Please note that the application deadline has been extended to Wednesday, 8 October 2025.

In 2026, admissions will open for an additional 7 Departments

As for the other Departments, including Nursing (Nicosia), Economics (Nicosia), Business Administration (Nicosia), Ports Management and Shipping (Larnaca), Psychology (Larnaca), the English-taught BA Programme in the Archaeology, History, and Literature of Ancient Greece (BAAG) (Nicosia), and Paedagogy & Primary Education (Nicosia), they will be launching academic activities in Cyprus during the current academic year, with student admissions starting in 2026.

The opening of a Branch of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Cyprus will mark a milestone in Higher Education and academic cooperation between the two countries. The operation of this Branch will further strengthen the existing strong national ties, offer fresh opportunities for students and academics, and serve as a beacon of education, scientific research, and innovation on the island and in the wider region of South-Eastern Europe. Moreover, it will create opportunities for academic and research collaborations with the existing top-tier Cypriot Institutions of Higher Education.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
