The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is actively involved in the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI), with Professor Chronis Kynigos serving as Greece’s national representative.
ICMI was established in 1908 at the Fourth International Congress of Mathematicians in Rome (see ICMI History) with the initial mandate of analyzing the similarities and differences in the secondary school teaching of mathematics among various countries. Following interruptions in activity as a result of the First and Second World Wars, ICMI was reconstituted in 1952 and became an official commission of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). It has since been dedicated to promoting research and development in mathematics education worldwide.
The first link provides a summary of mathematical instruction in Greece, prepared by Professor Chronis Kynigos, in collaboration with colleagues from the Department of Mathematics.
It should be noted that since 2019 the national representative has been nominated by the Greek Association of Researchers of Mathematics Education with the approval of both the Academy of Athens and the Hellenic Mathematical Society.
