Associate Professor of NKUA Dr Nikolaos Vrachnis was appointed Chair of the Certification Committee of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG)

Associate Professor of NKUA, Dr Nikolaos Vrachnis, undertakes to lead the recently formed Certification Committee of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG), whose mission is to create quality control procedures for Fetal Medicine and Gynecological Ultrasound Units in several developed and developing countries. The Committee is responsible for certifying the scientific background and practical competence of healthcare professionals who perform obstetric and gynecological ultrasound scans, as well as for conducting quality control of Units that provide patient services and doctor training in obstetric and gynecological ultrasonography.

Dr Nikolaos Vrachnis has already been a member of other Committees at the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, including the Education Committee. ISUOG has recently awarded him for his contribution as Chair of the Validation Committee of the Society after two consecutive successful terms. That, along with the announcement of Dr Vrachnis’s appointment to the Certification Committee, took place in a grand ceremony held on 17 October 2023 in Seoul, Korea, as part of the ISUOG World Congress 2023.

As the head of ISUOG’s Certification Committee, Dr Nikolaos Vrachnis will now have to plan and coordinate a series of actions and develop procedures in the context of the Society’s international educational work and research activities. The assignment of Dr Vrachnis to his new tasks—among other things—opens up a channel of cooperation between ISUOG and scientific bodies in our nation, which should present a plethora of prospects for Greek Obstetricians-Gynecologists as well as other healthcare professionals.

With an extensive background in academia, teaching, and research, Dr Nikolaos Vrachnis has made a name for himself in the field of public health by assuming prominent positions in highly prestigious organizations in Greece and beyond. ‘I am excited to be taking on this crucial role with the world’s top international organization, ISUOG, to help fill what is undoubtedly a gap related to the medical specialty of Obstetrics-Gynecology in general and ultrasonography in particular. The possibilities ahead for improving healthcare services for women at the international level are limitless’, noted Dr Vrachnis.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
