Welcome Ceremony – Class of 2024-2025 “LL.M. in International and European Law – School of Law NKUA

On 26 September 2024, at the Cultural Center of the University of Athens “Kostis Palamas”, the welcome ceremony of the Class 2024-2025 of the English-taught “LL.M. in International and European Law” of the Athens Law School of NKUA was held with great success. The main purpose was for the students to familiarize themselves with the new academic environment, to meet and chat with the faculty and to receive direct information about the curriculum. It should be noted that this year more than 150 applications were received for the total of 50 places in the programme and all the places were filled, including 22 international students from 14 countries (Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Hungary, United Kingdom, Australia, USA, Jordan, India, Argentina, Turkey, Nigeria).

Students were welcomed by the Director of the Programme Professor Maria Gavouneli, the former Dean of the School Professor Linos Alexandros Sicilianos, the Vice Dean of the Law School Associate Professor George Kyriakopoulos, Associate Professor Rebecca-Emmanouella Papadopoulou, Associate Professor Manolis Perakis, Assistant Professor Anastasios Gourgourinis and Assistant Professor Metaxia Kouskouna, and wished them a productive and successful academic year, focusing on the student-centred approach of the Programme.

The professors presented the two specialisations, “Public International Law” and “European Union Law“, highlighting that the programme is not limited to university lectures only, but also includes lectures by distinguished international scholars as well as seminars on contemporary and specialised issues of International and European law, providing students with valuable knowledge and skills.

The ceremony concluded with a light buffet, offering an opportunity for discussion between students and faculty as well as the programme’s partners.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
