191 Academics from the University of Athens Rank Among the World’s Leading Scientists

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has once again made a strong impression on the global academic stage, ranking highly in the prestigious ‘World’s Top 2% Scientists List’ by Stanford University, USA.

Specifically, 191 faculty members at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens have earned a spot in the top 2% of the world’s most influential scientists.

The ‘World’s Top 2% Scientists List’ is compiled annually by Stanford University, USA, and published in the Elsevier Data Repository. It identifies the researchers with the greatest global impact based on a variety of bibliometric indicators. The ranking relies on data derived from Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, and is considered one of the most reliable and authoritative lists worldwide.

The World’s Top 2% Scientists List includes separate data for:

Career-long Impact: Metrics cover the entire career of a scientist up to the end of current year-1.

Single Recent Year Impact: Metrics focus on citations received during current year-1.

The ranking uses the ‘Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators’ (Stanford/Elsevier) and relies on a composite indicator, the c-score, which in turn focuses on total citations, h-index, author positions (single, first, last author), and information on co-authorship.

The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score, or those ranked in the top 2% or above within their sub-field, providing an accurate reflection of global research excellence in a reliable and internationally recognized manner. The official Elsevier dataset is available. You can access it at:

In light of this remarkable achievement, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, shared his thoughts on this year’s ‘World’s Top 2% Scientists List’: This new international distinction, with 191 faculty members from the University of Athens listed among the top 2% of the most influential scientists globally, is yet another tangible recognition of the high quality and enduring excellence of research produced at our Institution. University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
