The University of Athens ranks 62nd worldwide after climbing 30 places in the AD Scientific Index World Top Universities Ranking 2024-2025

A significant distinction, which establishes the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in the consciousness of the international academic community as one of the top 100 Universities worldwide for research activity, was reflected in the results of the AD Scientific Index World Top Universities Ranking 2024-2025.

More precisely, our Institution climbed up 30 places from last year’s rating to 62nd place internationally, out of 24,317 Universities, Research Institutes, and Organizations from 220 countries included in the ranking. In addition, it ranks 15th among European Universities and 1st among Greek public Universities for 2024-2025. Following NKUA is Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2nd place nationwide and in 194th place globally. Next come the University of Patras (330th place globally), the University of Crete (399th place globally), and the National Technical University of Athens (425th place globally). The University of Thessaly (472nd place globally), the University of Ioannina (541st place globally), Democritus University of Thrace (768th place globally), the National Centre for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos(822nd place globally), and the Technical University of Crete (919th place globally) round out the top 10 nationwide.

At the same time the top 5 Cypriot Universities and Research Institutes included in the ranking are the University of Cyprus (678th place globally), Cyprus University of Technology (1141st place globally), the University of Nicosia (1943rd place globally), the Cyprus Institute (2578th place globally), and the European University of Cyprus (2742nd place globally).

In response to the above, the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, made the following statement:

The results of this ranking highlight once again the multidimensional, extroverted, and impactful nature of the scientific work carried out by the faculty members and researchers at the University of Athens. Especially when it comes to ranking systems based on open-access tools and a series of criteria that prioritize quality over quantity in research, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens stands consistently among the top 100 Universities worldwide. We heartily congratulate and wish to thank our colleagues and researchers from across the University of Athens for their highly productive and high-quality research. This is, after all, the cornerstone of a modern, successful, and globally acclaimed University, which aims at innovation, extroversion, and international collaboration.

AD Scientific Index World Top Universities is the first ranking system and the only one based on overall and most recent research productivity indicators for scientists and researchers at each University. More specifically, the performance, score, and positions of the Institutions on the tables are determined using the H index, the i10 index, and the number of citations of their researchers as shown in Google Scholar.

Another notable distinction for the University of Athens is that it has the most scientists among Greek Universities in this ranking (2287), with 155 of them in the top 3%, 536 in the top 10%, and 927 in the top 20% of researchers worldwide.
