Dr. Konstantinos Palikaras, Assistant Professor of Physiology at the Medical School (https://physiology.med.uoa.gr), has been honored with the prestigious Junior Faculty Award by the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS). Dr. Palikaras is one of only four recipients worldwide selected for this award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of physiology. The criteria for this award required nominees to be active in any area of physiology, regardless of whether their academic institutions were specifically designated as physiology departments. Eligible candidates included faculty members from departments of biomedical sciences, neuroscience, and related fields. The award was open to individuals within seven years of their faculty appointment, with the selection based on their contributions to research and teaching during their tenure as academic staff.
The International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS – https://www.iups.org/) was founded in 1953 to represent the field of physiology in international organizations and to give it a global voice. It provides a platform for the exchange of knowledge and expertise among physiologists from all countries, supporting global and regional scientific events as well as the development of research infrastructures. IUPS collaborates with national physiological societies and other organizations worldwide to facilitate initiatives that strengthen the field of physiology and cultivate the next generation of physiologists.
