A delegation from Hubei University of China visits NKUA

On Monday 11 November 2024, the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, International Relations, and Extroversion, Professor Sophia Papaioannou, received in her office at NKUA a delegation from Hubei University of China, consisting of the Deputy Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor Xiaohong Xia, the Executive Director of the Press Office, Mr Shunjin He, the Dean and Professor of Manchester Metropolitan Joint Institute, Professor Guozhi Liu, the Chairman of the Hubei University Council, Professor Hongxing Xie, the Dean of the School of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Professor Shihui Wang, the Section Chief of the International Office, Ms Wen Ζhang, the faculty member at the School of Life Sciences and Associate Director of the State Key Laboratory of Biocatalysis and Enzyme Engineering, Professor Shihui Yang, and the faculty member at the School of Life Sciences, Associate Professor Qiaoning He.

Participating in the working meeting—alongside the Vice-Rector—were, on the part of NKUA, the Chair of the Department of Biology, Professor Dimitris Hatzinikolaou, the faculty member at the same Department, Fulbright Foundation Scholar, American Society for Microbiology Country Ambassador to Greece, and Principal Investigator in Research Programmes of the US Department of Energy Office of Science, Associate Professor Katherine Maria Pappas—who also acted as the point of contact between NKUA and Hubei University—and the faculty member at the Department of Agricultural Development, Agri-Food, and Natural Resources Management and Chairman of the Regional Scientific Council for Research and Innovation of Central Greece, Professor Basil Stathopoulos. The discussion centred around the Chinese delegation’s great interest in growing academic and research ties at all levels and working with their Greek counterparts to establish a China-Greece Biomanufacturing Research and Educational Centre. Beyond this, though, Hubei University also aims to build relationships in Classical Studies, a goal enthusiastically embraced by the Vice-Rector, who, in her turn, pledged to assist in every possible way.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
