Civic engagement activities of Gerodontology NKUA for the 2025-2026 academic year

For the 15th consecutive year, the Discipline of Gerodontology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) continued its civic engagement initiatives, aiming to promote oral health among older adults in the local community.

The compulsory service-learning component of the 10th-semester Gerodontology course included educational activities at the Athens Nursing Home, the Dental Department/Adult Special Care Dentistry Unit of Asklepieio General Hospital of Voula, the Geriatric Assessment Center of Henry Dunant Hospital Center, the Department of Internal Medicine at Sotiria General Hospital, the Alzheimer Athens Organisation Day Care Centers for people with dementia in Pangrati, Piraeus, and Ampelokipoi, as well as its Mobile Units serving Pangrati and Piraeus.

As part of these activities, Gerodontology students provided free oral health examinations to beneficiaries, informed them and/or their caregivers about their oral health status, offered instructions on daily oral hygiene and care practices, and distributed oral care products.

In addition, through the participation of Gerodontology in the NKUA Open Lab “Intergenerational Communities” with the “Smile for Life” programme, educational activities were organised to train healthcare professionals and caregivers in daily oral care of vulnerable older adults at the Athens Nursing Home. The programme also included oral health literacy events for the public and provision of free oral health examinations at the Church of Saint Stylianos in Korydallos.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
