The Hemato-Oncology Course by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in collaboration with Mayo Clinic (USA) was successfully concluded

An important Hemato-Oncology Course was held by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in collaboration with Mayo Clinic, USA in Athens from Thursday June 29 to July 1.

The goal of the course was to present the latest data announced during the recent American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting and European Hematology Association (EHA) Annual Congress, which took place in the first two weeks of June 2023 in Chicago and Frankfurt respectively.

Seventy-five esteemed Professors from the National And Kapodistrian University of Athens and Mayo Clinic presented the newest data pertaining to the diagnosis and treatment of solid tumors, hematologic neoplasms , as well as other hematologic diseases and disorders associated with blood coagulation. Coordinators of the Course were Professor Thanos Dimopoulos, Chairman of the Department of Clinical Therapeutics, Alexandra Hospital, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Professor Panos Savvides, Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, Arizona, USA.

It should be noted that this is the first event of this kind to be held in Greece, not to mention one that boasts the presence of distinguished Scientists from one of the most important foundations in the world, namely Mayo Clinic. More than 500 persons participated in this Course, either physically or virtually.  This Course allowed Greek Physicians, who were not able to attend the meeting ASCO and EHA to gain valuable insight into the latest developments in Oncology and Hematology.

The plan is to repeat this successful course on an annual basis.

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
