Cyprus Cabinet Approves Listing of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens as a Cyprus Branch in the Register of Universities of Cyprus

The Cabinet of the Republic of Cyprus has approved the listing of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), as a Cyprus branch located in Nicosia, in the Register of Universities of Cyprus.

‘Consequently, all substantive and formal procedures have been completed so that we now have the branch of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens included in our Register of Universities. This marks the successful end of all efforts that began with the new legislation passed by Parliament’, said Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou at the conclusion of the Cabinet meeting.

The Minister added that the buildings which will house the University’s Schools and Departments have already been inspected and deemed fit for use. These premises were granted by the Archbishopric and the Municipality of Nicosia.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
