IAME International Conference 2022, Korea Honourable election of professor Theodoros Syriopoulos (PMS) to the IAME Council

The central annual conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) was held in Busan, South Korea, from 13 to 16 September 2022, under the auspices of the Korean Maritime Institute (KMI), with great success and a multitudinous international presence of academic and research participants.

In the framework of the conference, the ten-member IAME Council, i.e., the Association’s Supreme Board of Directors, was elected for the next two years.

Mr Theodoros Syriopoulos, professor of Shipping Finance and Chair of the Department of Port Management and Shipping (PMS) of NKUA, was the only Greek academic to be elected as a member of the IAME Council.

Throughout the conference, participants presented more than 400 scientific research papers on a wide range of subjects such as international shipping, port management, logistics, combined transports, technological developments, blue growth and sustainability, green investments and financing, energy, geopolitical issues, economic development, et al.

The Department of Port Management and Shipping of NKUA had a significant representation in the IAME 2022 Conference with permanent and fellow researchers and the following papers:

The International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) was founded in the early 1990s and currently has over 500 individual academic members from all continents and more than 20 corporate members. Over the years, IAME has established itself as a leading think tank for international shipping and ports. The Association’s annual international conferences are hosted by various academic, research, and other organizations worldwide. IAME maintains close ties with several international organizations, including the UN’s UNCTAD and IMO.

The IAME 2023 International Conference will take place in Los Angeles, USA, from 6 to 9 September 2023.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
