As the new academic year begins, I wish you strength and success in all our endeavours!
Our University is about to embark on a new phase of change and challenges. The public University’s next day depends on thorough planning, dedication to goals, determination, and effectiveness.
Focused on our students, we will all, academic and administrative staff alike, continue to promote Greece’s biggest and most historic University.

What we envisage is a functional and productive University, one that is committed to the missions of learning, research, innovation, and culture transfer—a true catalyst for the progress and development of the country.
We call on everyone to work together, systematically, and enthusiastically towards a brighter future for our University.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
