Professor of NKUA Vassilis Gorgoulis and his collaborators published on 5 October 2023 in the international and highly prestigious scientific journal Molecular Cell a pioneering research on the detection and isolation of senescent cells.

Since cellular senescence is involved in numerous diseases, the authors present a pioneering and innovative chemical compound (GLF16) as a marker for the special tracking and imaging of senescent cells in various biological materials. A distinctive characteristic of the GLF16 marker is that it allows for the first time the detection of senescent cells at the level of living tissues and organisms. More importantly, it enables the selective isolation of live senescent cells, opening the door for the first time to their precise characterization at various levels, particularly those of the genome and epigenome, and, ultimately, to the development of personalized treatments in pathological fields where cellular senescence is involved.
