Announcement by the Presidency of the Republic

The President of the Republic, Konstantinos An. Tasoulas, welcomed the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, who informed him on matters within his area of responsibility.

In particular, Mr Siasos presented the University’s strategic plan for the coming years, its international orientation, and the agreements made so far with leading Universities abroad, including Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Sorbonne, and others.

Finally, the Rector outlined the Institution’s ongoing effort to establish a Branch in Cyprus, a project that has already received a strong response from society on the island.

The President of the Republic thanked the Rector, Mr Siasos, for the briefing and wished him every success in achieving his goals, which, given the history and the significance of the University of Athens, are also of national importance.

‘It was a great honour to inform His Excellency, the President of the Republic, Mr Konstantinos An. Tasoulas, about the upward trajectory of the country’s oldest and largest University, highlighting its latest collaborations in education and research with top academic Institutions worldwide. The President of the Republic showed special interest in both the strategic goals of the University—including the establishment of its Cyprus Branch—and issues concerning the everyday lives of students and staff at the Institution from which he himself graduated.

I express my sincere gratitude for the outstanding work he performs daily as President of the Republic, as well as for his unwavering commitment to educational matters. We at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens take great pride in the fact that our distinguished alumni rise to even the highest state office of our country’.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
