Professor Evangelos Giamarellos-Bourboulis Joins Global Sepsis Alliance Board

Greece is gaining international visibility in the global fight against sepsis with the election of Dr Evangelos Giamarellos-Bourboulis, Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, to the Board of the Global Sepsis Alliance (GSA) for the 2025-2028 term.

The GSA announced that elections held in August brought to the Board 20 experts and advocates from 17 countries across every continent—from Africa and Asia to Europe, the Americas, and Oceania—a reflection of the Alliance’s truly global nature and inclusive character.

Professor Niranjan “Tex” Kissoon from Canada was re-elected President of the newly-appointed Board and will continue guiding global efforts to raise awareness of sepsis, improve prevention, and drive better patient outcomes worldwide.

Professor Giamarellos’s election underscores Greece’s active role in shaping global health policy on sepsis. He currently serves as President of the Hellenic Institute for the Study of Sepsis and Chair of the European Sepsis Alliance.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
