Professor of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the NKUA’s School of Medicine, Alexis Kelekis, was appointed President-elect of the Society of Interventional Oncology – SIO (https://www.sio-central.org/).

This US-based Society aims to advance interventional radiology in oncology, thus providing patients with image-guided—endovascular and non-endovascular—alternatives and treatments. Interventional oncology aspires to be the 4th pillar of cancer therapy, the other three being surgical, medical, and radiation oncology.

It is very significant for the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens to enjoy an honour generally reserved for major American Universities whose faculty members are currently or have previously served on the SIO Board of Directors. It is a special recognition to have a faculty member of a Greek University appointed President-elect of the Society of Interventional Oncology.

The SIO Board of Directors consists of Professors from Beth Israel, MGH, Mayo Clinic, UCSD, MCW, and faculty from other Universities worldwide, such as Singapore and Milano. All the above honoured Professor Kelekis with their choice.

Professor Kelekis mentioned, among other things, the following:

‘It is a great honour and challenge to assume the role of President-elect of a scientific society of international renown, hoping to offer patients and colleagues access to knowledge and the techniques of interventional radiology in general and interventional oncology in particular, which can make use of imaging to guide materials and non-invasive treatment processes’.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
