Rector Gerasimos Siasos Highlights the Importance of Investing in Knowledge and the Next Generation in ‘Parapolitika’

The new academic year marks an important milestone for the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens – Cyprus Branch. As the University of Athens celebrates its 190th anniversary and reflects on its long-standing contribution to the Greek and international academic community, it is now closer to Cyprus than ever, strengthening a relationship rooted in deep historical, intellectual and cultural ties.

Cyprus is a strategic priority for the University of Athens’ internationalisation and global engagement. The School of Medicine, launched in 2025, has already proved highly successful. Next month, we plan to open programmes in education and the humanities, including the Departments of Primary Education and Psychology, as well as in economics and management, through the Departments of Economics and Business Administration. They will be delivered in brand-new, fully equipped facilities.

Working with the relevant authorities in Cyprus, we have established a modern academic and research hub that combines high-quality programmes, scientific collaboration and new opportunities for young people with the same high standards upheld by the University of Athens in Greece. The quality of our teaching and the standing of our degrees are non-negotiable. This commitment is reflected in the University of Athens’ leading position in international rankings of Greek higher education institutions and its place among the world’s top 200 universities.

For us, it is particularly important to build close relationships with Cyprus’ universities, research institutions and wider society. We want the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens – Cyprus Branch to be a place for constructive dialogue, knowledge exchange and joint initiatives, with a clear international outlook and a strong focus on the future. Our presence in Cyprus is an important step towards the University’s continued internationalisation. We are taking this step with the conviction that education is the most meaningful investment we can make in the future and the surest route to a better society.
