UNESCO Chair on Climate Diplomacy Event featuring Daniel Bodansky

The UNESCO Chair on Climate Diplomacy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA) successfully hosted a significant event on Tuesday, May 27th, 2025, at the “Kostis Palamas” Building featuring Daniel Bodansky, Regents’ and Foundation Professor of Law at Arizona State University. The event was held on the occasion of the publication of the second edition of The Art and Craft of International Environmental Law (Oxford University Press, 2024).

The discussion included critical dilemmas faced by environmental law in its entirety, focusing on the roles of courts and tribunals in international environmental protection, the concept of the effectiveness of international environmental law, and the increasing involvement of non-state actors in environmental governance. Professor Bodansky provided substantial insights that encouraged reflection on the pivotal role of international law in safeguarding the environment.

The panel was chaired by the UNESCO Chairholder, Professor Emmanuella Doussis, while Assistant Professor Ilias Plakokefalos and Dr George Dikaios acted as discussants. The discussion was followed by a vibrant Q&A with the audience.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
